Nevermore by Kelly Creagh Review

Hi Everyone!
Today I am reviewing:

Nevermore by Kelly Creagh
Publisher: Atheneum Books For Young Readers
Publication Date: August 28th, 2010
Source: Bought!
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

Nevermore is one of my favorite books ever. It is completely unforgettable. It may be long, but each page is written with pure beauty and excitement.

I will always remember how this book inspired me to research into the world of Poe's stories myself after I read Nevermore for the first time over a year ago. This book started my journey to loving my now favorite short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Poe and Poe's other works.

I really liked how Poe's work was incorporated into the story of Nevermore. I enjoyed reading Isobel's reactions to Poe's works and how the character's worked in the supernatural dream world.

Isobel Lanley is one of the most courageous and ever-changing characters ever. She grows up and changes so much during one school project. She is funny, stubborn and determined. I love the creative idea she comes up with for the Poe project presentation. The presentation is one of the most hilarious and incredible scenes I have ever read! If I had thought of giving myself a pseudonym for my blog, I would have chosen Isobel after her. Isobel Ivashkov.

Varen Nethers has a more of a sly sense of humor and is a true intellectual. Varen is a reader and a writer. He is very smart in his knowledge of writers, especially Poe. I love the scene where he wears a shirt with the word's "hooligan" written on it. You have to read this amazing book to find out why that fact is so witty! He is satisfyingly quiet, a thinker and has a unique style.

I enjoyed the steady blooming romance that occurred between Isobel and Varen. They start out the tale barely knowing each other and grow throughout the book from reluctant acquaintances, to unlikely friends to outstanding romance partners. I enjoyed every scene between the two of them. Especially the ice cream scene!

There are also amazing secondary characters. From Isobel's strict but caring father, Isobel's video-game obsessed younger brother Danny to Isobel's humorously eccentric friend Gwen.

Every page of Nevermore is written in a captivating tone. Creagh is a true artist in writing descriptions of setting and events. My only complaint is that the dream world is, while enchanting, completely confusing.

Anyways, read Nevermore and fall in love with its amazing story!

Thanks for Reading!

  11. I can't believe book 2 is finally coming out. I've read this ages ago and I've been dying to get my hands on the sequel. I know what you mean about the slowly developing romance, that was my favorite part as well. There was no instalove in sight. And the entire thing was so imaginative and gorgeous.
    Wonderful review, Rachel.

  12. Oh my gosh, Nevermore is one of my favourite reads too and I REALLY think you're going to love Enshadowed! (It broke my heart over and over again <3) Isobel is definitely one of my fave heroines too (along with Adrian, so your potential pseudonym made me giggle like crazy!), and I love how you mentioned Gwen and Danny. They play pretty big parts in book two, and I think you're going to love them more! :)

    Absolutely beautiful review, Rachel! <3
